We have four koi in a 55gal tank. One of the koi started losing his colour and stopped eating. For about a week he was at the top looking like he needed air, so we started airating the tank more, but his condition didn’t improve. When he did eat he would spit out every other piece and started convulsing. About a week later all of the koi started gasping at the top. So I changed the water and left out the chemical treatment and all of the koi stop the gasping. The sick koi started getting better for another week, but after that he just stayed at the bottom of the tank and only swam to get food. He was gaining weight and looking better, but then I walked down one morning and he was dead. Should I be worried about the other 3 koi catching what he did?
Okay, I know koi are pond fish, but when you live in an area where four months out of the year water is thawed you kind of can’t. The koi are 5inches and under. We do a water change (25-30%) every week, along with cleaning out the filter, and change the medias every month. We stopped adding the chemicals or salt because it seemed to be making the koi worse.
Haha, last detail:
The water we use to change the tank out with is run through an RO filter, so it is purified water we use.

Since i didn’t treat the water (didn’t know to) i think that’s a cause.. my koi is floating on it’s side at the top of the water so i took it inside isolated in in a smaller tank with treated water..it’s been 3-4 days and it’s not eating and still floating (yes it’s alive) what should i do or is there anything i should do>> HELP PLEASE

I had some sick Koi and put them in another pond and the one Koi in that pond spend all afternoon saving them. All Koi are fine. I think the other pond was not getting enough oxygen. We call the little guy THE LIFEGUARD now.

and i know it is sick but i don’t know how to diagnose it because maybe it may be a few combinations of diseases/ailments

i have added melafix and quick cure
and i did a partial (25%) water change today and another partial a week ago.

ok so the symptoms:
it doesn’t eat, lays toward the bottom of the tank
doesn’t swim much
there’s streaking (red marks) on its fins
and on its mouth its like darker red color (it supposed to be white)

There’s some red on its gills now (recently today), and some white bumps

i just checked the fish and there are small spiderweb red veins throughout the entire fish.

there is also some beginning fin rot on the koi (which i don’t know how it started b/c i had melafix in the tank.)

it might be flukes (that’s what i think it is) but i really really hope its not khv.

i don’t know what medicine to buy so tomorow i might buy lifeguard (but i don’t know if it will work) and a heater to start treatment for khv (in case if it is)

but im afraid the koi isn’t gonna last through this.

HOWEVER i have a few other fish in the 75 gal tank, and they seemed fine but now they they are rubbing against objects.
i added ammo-lock to rid the ammonia
however the quick cure and the melafix do not seem to have any effect!!!

2 Make your pond as large as you can

5 Plan to install a bird net


There are many birds of prey that would love to steal your koi. Don’t give them the opportunity; plan your pond location so it is possible to cover it with a net.


6 Keep insecticides away from your pond


When landscaping your pond keep in mind that you should not use any insecticides or herbicides near the water. Even a small amount of common garden poison can kill your beautiful fish.


7 Get proper equipment for your pond


Several accessories are absolutely essential for a healthy koi pond. Ideally you will have to invest into a water pump, filtration system, water aerator and an ultraviolet sterilizer. If the water in your pond is still, your fish might get sick and eventually die. Koi pond filtration systems are expensive, so as an alternative you can make your own homemade filters.
